Pantry cabinets and kitchen storage

Kitchens run out of cupboard before they run out of floor. These are the two pieces that fix that without a fitter.

The freestanding pantry

A tall pantry cabinet is the cheapest way to add a run of cupboard to a kitchen that has none left. Ours reach 70.9 inches, which is close to a fitted unit height and tall enough that the top shelf becomes long-term storage rather than daily.

Adjustable shelves are the specification to check, and 11 of the 16 pieces here carry them. Tinned food, cereal boxes and a stand mixer want three different shelf gaps, and a cabinet with fixed shelves will only ever suit one of them properly. Several models also add a lit bay for a coffee machine or a kettle, which turns the cabinet into a working station rather than a store.

The bin cabinet, which is a stranger product than it sounds

A tilt-out bin cabinet hides one or two bins behind a door that tips forward. It exists because a kitchen bin in the open is the thing people notice in a room they otherwise like. Nine cabinets here carry odour control in the back panel, which is what makes hiding a bin behind a door survivable in summer.

The measurement to take is not the cabinet, it is the bin. Check the internal height against the bin you already own, or plan to buy the liner size the cabinet is described for.

One thing this department is not

Federal clothing storage unit rules do not apply to kitchen furniture. The Consumer Product Safety Commission scopes 16 CFR part 1261 to units intended for storing clothing typical of bedroom furniture, and names dining and kitchen pieces as outside it.

That is a statement about which test regime applies, not about physics. A tall narrow cabinet with heavy things on the top shelf still wants anchoring to the wall, and the campaign the Commission runs on tip-overs asks for exactly that on any top-heavy piece in the house.
